JOHN POTTER

The voice of John Potter comes from far away, very far, and from an active form of research on songs and on the use of the voice as the first and essential musical instrument.
Singer- tenor, author, professor at the University of York, his live performances include The Dowland Project, Red Byrd, The Gavin Bryars Ensemble and Being Dufay.
In his research John Potter shows his vocation to explore; In the 70’s he establishes the avant-garde group Electric Phoneix and then convinces the Arts Council to fund a vocal synthesizer. His travels in music continue with the electronic duo with John Whiting, collaborating with Manfred Man, The Who, Mike Oldfield and then with the Hillard Ensemble for 17 years.
His latest project is ‘Being Dufay’ (ECM New Series 2071) a collaboration with Ambrose Field, which resumes the work of Guillaume Dufay, central figure of the Burgundian School in the XV century. Far away…

"In 1966 I met my wife so couldn't concentrate on the football.
In 1994 the 3 Tenors World Cup song was No 1 worldwide, which meant the Hilliard Ensemble's Officium album got stuck at No2....And this year Being Dufay came from nowhere to a rather unexpected success, just like Totò Schillaci in Italia 90..."
