“...my intention is always polarized by concepts of the beautiful and the sublime. To me, beauty is crystal; rationality, precision, simplicity, elegance, delicacy. The sublime is infinity, infinitesimal, immensity, indescribable, ineffable. The purest beauty is the world of mathematics…”
The Japanese sound and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda was born in 1966 and began to formulate his expressive profile with the multidisciplinary collective from Kyoto ‘Dumb Type’ to then establish his own label CCI Recordings and undertake his solo career in 1995 with the album “Fragments”.
Ikeda explores the physical property of music through sensorial stimulations provoked by sounds and ultrasounds, frequencies and beats. His algorithmic calculations originate from this material and create a universe in which video is generated by audio elements. The anti poetics of calculation therefore assume a deeper meaning as an expression of the relationship between man, media and technology; ‘Matrix” (2000) wins the Golden Nica prize at the Prix Arts Electronica in 2001. His project with Alva Noto “Cyclo” explores not perfection but the errors that can however become and evolve.
